When you grow up as a Jewish kid, you’re always told how fascism is possible anywhere. You’re told about Germany in the 1930s & how it led to all that happened next. When I was younger, I scoffed at the idea that it could happen in America. Today, it seems entirely too possible.
@benjpasek My late grandma always told my dad that as Jews our passports always need to be updated. I hope I don't have to use it anytime soon.
@benjpasek I’m not Jewish nor were my students, but here in the south I saw parallels. I got trained in Holocaust ed & took my middle school students thru deep dives into that era (how did it happen), issues w/US social justice, & recognizing propaganda, so it couldn’t happen here. It did.
@benjpasek Nobody watching the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo could have imagined it would be devastated by war in just a few years. We never believe that disaster can happen until it does.
@benjpasek Human nature is a part of being human. And part of human nature is evil. It is a certainty that evil, as well as good, will recur and recur. Different places, different people, different names, different faces....same problem. We must remain ever diligent.
@benjpasek As kids, my sister and I both had hiding spots in our rooms for when (not "if") the Nazis came. We didn't discover this until years later. Also, hers was better.
