Georgia confirms what I’ve learned from decades of doing voting rights work. Voter fraud is not the problem, it’s voter suppression. Republicans use made-up allegations of fraud as an excuse to prevent eligible citizens who they suspect are Democrats from voting.

I've received several DMs from friends asking what do to about parents/family members who believe misinformation regarding the election, vaccines and COVID. Here's a research-based thread to help explain the roots of these beliefs and how to (and how *not* to) address them. 1/

A long read. And from a year or so ago. But still relevant today. Deplatforming is a short-term fix. The people haven't disappeared, and there's still a lot of work to do to bring them back from delusions.

I get a lot of push-back on this but I'll say this again. Trust people & don't focus on the occasional cutting in line. A vaccine is a vaccine, and the worst scenario is not incorrect order but slow rollout and wasted vaccines. Remove the bureaucracy and complicated verification.
bakeries have figured this out, if you have leftover pastries at the end of the day you want it to go to whoever can take it, throwing away day old pastries is a unethical waste of food
i mean i'd take a day-old vaccine at half the price

This overly bureaucratic prioritization, and the outrage over a few undeserving people cutting ahead (which I don't support but the harm is much less than all this) will likely do more damage to those in high-risk categories than the actual cutting in line. Roll it the @#!! out.
100% all of this thread: we shouldn't waste vaccine period. equity of access is good, but bureaucratic means-testing, as usual, is making everything worse
the newest freshest form of hell has to be the customer service lines that put you on hold and then force you to press 2 to stay on the line every couple of minutes
if the police was "merely" racist and treated white insurrectionists with kid gloves that would be bad. but this is worse. the story that's emerging is that law enforcement didn't show up, *hoping* to enable the coup.

My wife and I attended the “Stop the Steal” Trump Insurrection on Wednesday (as observers, NOT participants) and there are FIVE big take-aways from what we witnessed and heard outside the Capitol that I'd like to share. (We took all the pictures below). 1/22
1. (THREAD) So, it seems like the deplatforming debate is once again kicking off, so I thought I would introduce some of the earlier work that was done in this area back when ISIS was buck wild on social media. What have we learned over the last six years might be useful today:
So many times when I tried to cover racial resentment or white nationalism my editors — and yes, I’ll name @NateSilver538 here — acted like they were protecting the truth from me. Instead they prevented Americans from learning the truth.

Just learned that incarcerated workers will be forced to make the new furniture that replaces what was destroyed in the Capitol. This Tik Tok does a really good job of breaking it down:
also the government MUST BUY FROM A SINGLE COMPANY
like someone literally lobbied the government for a license for slavery and GOT ONE

After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
so it takes a little over 4 years for twitter to resolve a support ticket

Can’t believe the creators of the monster have lost control of the monster, is there any precedent for this in books or film
so is the correct name "republicans", or "republicans' monster"
We need the John Lewis Voting Rights Act now. Tell your congresspeople!
And now, here comes the attacks on democracy that are less sensational. Starting with Georgia, where record absentee voting turnout means Republicans are planning to suppress those votes in the future

Shot/chaser. @washingtonpost sanitizing people intent on overthrowing the government. Vile.
woke up quick at about noon
just thought that I had to be in DC soon
I gotta get drunk before the day begins
before my daughter starts bitchin' about my friends
